Arriving
The entrance is small, surrounded by greenery, beautifully kept, and it smells wonderful — a genuinely lovely space to walk into. You check in over a hot tea.
The room
Every room is a suite. There appear to be two tiers: the more expensive Premium Suite and the standard Suite. We had the standard, and it was still extremely spacious.
Each room has its own open-air bath, and there is a communal bath as well. With a child, going to the communal bath together means I do not actually get to rest, so having a bath in the room counts for a great deal.
Dinner at Yamanoha
Dinner is at Yamanoha, the only restaurant in the building — and here too the thinking is excellent. Families with children are seated in private rooms by preference, while couples and adult groups get the open seating with the good window views. That is a win for both, is it not?
Adults get a set course; children get a single plate (a very generous one), which is a real help with a fussy eater like mine, because she can simply take what she likes.
In the evening you can have a drink at the back of the lobby. We went in August, and the seasonal drink was a non-alcoholic shine muscat cocktail.
Kayaking on Lake Kawaguchi
We had booked kayaking for the next morning, so we were up early. You can book it at reception when you check in.
It is about ten minutes from the hotel by car, and they collect you from the entrance, so it works even if you have come by train. The guide does the hard paddling, so you can paddle when you feel like it and otherwise just look about. My daughter paddled enthusiastically the entire way.
Breakfast
The breakfast was a hit with my daughter, and the kenchin soup — full of vegetables and deeply flavoured — she asked for a second bowl of.
One more thing nearby
There is a Forest Adventure course nearby, set in beautiful woodland, and we stopped there on the first day before checking in. At six my daughter was right at the lower limit of what it suits — younger children have very little they can do, so I would not recommend it below that. The adults threw themselves into it too.
